Easy, Do-It-Yourself Almond Milk

As someone who has significantly cut out dairy products, almond milk and coconut milk have become staples in my fridge. From unsweetened vanilla to dark chocolate (the ABSOLUTE best!!), I have dabbled my fair share in the world of almond milk! A few weeks ago while enjoying a night on the town with some of my fellow grad students, one of the girls explained how she makes her own almond milk and it is SO EASY AND CHEAP! As a women who loves to save a buck and experiment in the kitchen, I was thoroughly intrigued.

After hearing how easy her instructions were, I immediately told my boyfriend (also an avid almond milk drinker) , "We are ganna make our own almond milk!" So while he was visiting me in STL these past few weeks (we had a blast and I did NOT want him to leave!! *sad face*), we decided to embark on the journey that is the milking of almonds! Here's what we did!

  • Let 1 cup of almonds soak overnight
  • In the morning, drain and rinse the almonds
  • Put almonds and 3 cups of water in the blender
  • Blend on high for 30 second intervals until almonds appear pulverized
  • Using a mesh sieve or cheesecloth, drain almond milk from pulp
  • Pour almond milk into a pitcher, will keep in fridge for 2 weeks

Viola! You now have your very own, chemical-free, homemade almond milk! It taste so fresh and delicious you will never go back! You can also experiment with adding sweetener if you enjoy sweetened almond milk, or vanilla extract if you like vanilla almond milk. Personally, I think my next almond milk venture will be to recreate Silk's Dark Chocolate Almond Milk (SERIOUSLY it's so good!!).
Here's a snazzy infographic to pin for easy access!

Now for the price! I grabbed a 1lb bag of raw almonds from TJ's for I believe about $6.50. This bag will make about 4 containers of almond milk (4 cups of almonds in the bag), which brings the cost per container to about $1.60. This saves you approximately $6 per bag of almonds you use to make almond milk! Not too shabby says this broke grad gal!!

So, there you have it folks! Check that off your bucket list and drink away knowing exactly what is in your almond milk.... ALMONDS! Or those few extra ingredients you may decide to experiment with! Bottom line: cheaper almond milk that is fresh with no chemical preservatives! Now, its just what to do with that almond pulp..

Have you every make your own almond milk? If so, what do you like to flavor it with?
